Humphreys played both ways for the Mississippi State Bulldogs in 2016, both as an outfielder as well as the team's closer. He was drafted in the 36th round by the Nationals in 2013 but went back to school instead.

Humphreys had Tommy John surgery in 2012 and only got back onto the mound this year. As the Bulldogs closer he showed a 92-95mph fastball and a good slider. The Rockies announced him as a relief pitcher so apparently they were impressed.
