Jose Gomez continues his hot start with the Grand Junction Rockies

Colorado Rockies minor league news and notes for July 11, 2016.

Monday was a relatively quiet day for the Colorado Rockies’ farm system. Of the club’s four full-season affiliates, only High-A Modesto was in play and, quite frankly, there were no performances of note in that one. That, however, does not mean there were no performances of note at all yesterday.

Down in Grand Junction, 2013 international signee Jose Gomez just continues to hit. The 19-year-old went 2-for-3 with a double in the Rockies’ loss to raise his slash line to an absurd .443/.490/.545 in his stateside debut. Perhaps the most impressive thing about his performance thus far—aside from his 39 hits that lead the Pioneer League—is his strikeout rate. Gomez has struck out only four times in 103 plate appearances on the year, a rate of 3.9 percent that is also the best in the Pioneer League.

Like Purple Row's Cameron Goeldner, Gomez is still just a teen, which means he is at an appropriate age for his level. If he continues to hit like this, expect to see him jump up some prospect lists in the not-so-distant future. Let’s take a look at some of the rest of yesterday’s action.

Triple-A: Day off

Double-A: Day off

High-A: Lake Elsinore Storm 5, Modesto Nuts 0

It was a tough day offensively for the Nuts, who managed just five singles and did not draw a walk while striking out 11 times. They’re now a dismal 32-57 on the season.

Dom Nunez (No. 13 PuRP): 0-for-3, 2 K

Wes Rogers (HM PuRP): 1-for-3, K

Collin Ferguson: 2-for-4, 2 K

Low-A: Day off

Short-Season A: Boise Hawks 2, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 0

The Hawks took game one of their doubleheader thanks to a strong performance on the mound from Antonio Santos and Jacob Bosiokovic’s three-hit day.

Garrett Hampson (2016 3rd round pick): 0-for-3, K

Willie Abreu (2016 6th round pick): 0-for-3, K

Jacob Bosiokovic: 3-for-3, HR, RBI

Antonio Santos: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 4 K

Boise Hawks 7, Salem-Keizer Volcanoes 4

In game two yesterday, the Hawks completed the sweep and managed seven runs without any player having a multi-hit game. Last years’ third-round pick Javier Medina started on the mound and pitched well for Boise.

Javier Medina: 5 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 4 K

Jacob Bosiokovic: 1-for-4, 2B, 3 RBI, K

Rookie: Ogden Raptors 8, Grand Junction Rockies 3

Grand Junction fell into a deep 7-0 hole in this one before the bats showed any signs of life. Their rally attempt fell well short and the Rockies dropped back to an even .500 on the season.

Sam Moll (No. 25 PuRP): 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Pedro Gonzalez (No. 28 PuRP): 0-for-3, BB, 3 K

Jose Gomez: 2-for-3, 2B

DSL: DSL Rockies 6, DSL Braves 5 (10 innings)

The DSL Rockies picked up their 20th win of the year thanks to Franklin Garcia’s RBI single in the top of the 10th inning. Four other Rockies players had two hits in the game as part of the winning effort.

Daniel Montano (HM PuRP): 1-for-4, 2B, BB, K

Gabriel Estrada: 5 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 4 K

Ramon Marcelino: 2-for-5, 2B, HR, 2 RBI, K

Jonatan Mezquita: 2-for-5, 2B

Hidekel Gonzalez: 2-for-5, 2B, K
