The Modesto Nuts fell to the Bakersfield Blaze 5-1 on Friday night thanks to two bad pitches from starter Yency Almonte. Almonte turned in six innings of work allowing all five Blaze runs on nine hits, two walks and six strikeouts. The runs all came off the bat of Blaze catcher Tyler Marlette, a two-run shot in the second and a three-run blast in the sixth. It was the second rough outing in a row for Almonte, who now sits at 5-8 with a 4.01 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 104 strikeouts and 30 walks in 112⅓ innings.
Despite the disappointing results, Almonte was still “impressive.” Almonte was working 94-97 on his fastball and hit 98 multiple times. That alone should land him somewhere on your PuRPs list, but Almonte is much more than a big fastball. Check out this video from earlier in the season against the Blaze.
PuRPs voting closes Monday, July 18 so if you’re like the current author and haven’t submitted your ballot yet, take some time this weekend to make it—and find a spot for Yency.
