A trio of errors proved costly for the Colorado Rockies, who suffered a 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles, spoiling David Dahl’s big league debut.
The Rockies rookie left fielder was 1-for-4 on the night with a single and a run scored in the seventh inning against Baltimore starter Yovani Gallardo, but the Orioles answered back with a run in the bottom of the inning that would eventually send the game to extra innings.
It was an inauspicious start for the Rockies as Nolan Arenado made errors in each of the first two innings, the second of which led to an unearned run scoring and the Orioles taking a 1-0 lead.
However, Arenado atoned for his pair of miscues in the top of the fourth with a solo home run, his 26th of the season, to tie the game at 1-1.
The Rockies briefly took the lead in the seventh when Dahl singled, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI single from Mark Reynolds that put the Rockies up, 2-1. Baltimore then tied the game again in the bottom of the inning when an Adam Jones ground out brought home Nolan Reimold, who was hit by a pitch.
Baltimore’s bullpen held the Rockies down for the next three innings, allowing just a two-out single to Daniel Descalso in the top of the tenth, sending the game to the bottom of the 10th still tied at two.
Jordan Lyles came on to pitch the bottom of the 10th for the Rockies and got Pedro Alvarez to ground out before allowing singles to Jones and Jonathan Schoop, putting runners on the corners for Manny Machado. Lyles got what he wanted from Machado, a comebacker, but bobbled it before throwing to catcher Nick Hundley, who dropped the ball allowing Jones to score and the Orioles to win, 3-2.
The Rockies will look to even the series tomorrow as Chad Bettis takes on Orioles ace Chris Tillman, first pitch is at 5:05 p.m. Mountain time.
