Top prospects Jeff Hoffman and Yency Almonte continued their stellar seasons, both turning in electric performances for their respective teams Tuesday night.
Almonte is a few years away but is making the case to be considered among the top pitching prospects in the Rockies organization. Almonte turned in his second straight shutout and has struck out 17 in his last 13 innings while walking five. The 22-year-old flamethrower has the ability to succeed as a starter, but he might be destined for the bullpen where he can go all-out of an inning or two at a time. It all depends on his development from here on out; can he gain a little more control and continue his offspeed development or will he be added to a growing list of young flamethrowers making their way through the Rockies minor leagues?
Hoffman, who led Triple-A Albuquerque to an 8-4 victory, has been dominating the top minor league circuit and is (theoretically) waiting for a rotation spot to open up on the big league roster. Our own Chris Jackson details his performance here. If (when) Hoffman makes his debut with the Rockies, don’t expect him to be let loose. He’ll probably follow the same blueprint that Gray followed last year; 80-pitch limits on starts and breaking up his starts during the final weeks of the year.
