Rockies prospect Riley Pint rebounds after tough inning

It was a mixed bag of pitching performances on the farm Wednesday, as five former, current, or future PuRPs took the hill.

First round draft pick Riley Pint probably had the most frustrating day of the bunch, giving up five runs—all of them unearned—in five innings for the Grand Junction Rockies. Pint, who threw a season-high 66 pitches (44 strikes) on Wednesday, was undone by his own two-base throwing error with one out in the bottom of the third. That runner came around to score the next at bat, in which Pint recorded his only strikeout of the game. Then, with two outs and nobody on the Voyagers went hit by pitch, single, walk, single, double, groundout to bring the total to five unearned runs in the inning. From the Grand Junction Sentinel:

“It was great because I had a pretty rough third inning and I wanted to get back out there and put up a couple of zeros, which I did,” he said. “Tonight was just the case of one bad inning and I just have to get past that and I have all good innings going forward.”

It’s great to see that mindset out of a young pitcher. It’s worth keeping in mind that Pint will probably need every step on the developmental ladder before he becomes a regular contributor to the big league club, and nights like these are huge for that process.
