The Colorado Rockies have now lost 11 of their last 16 games after being swept out of Los Angeles on Sunday afternoon. The host Dodgers cruised to a 4-1 victory thanks to starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, as well as the Rockies' inability to get any offense going. Across the three game set this weekend, the Rockies managed just two runs — both late in games, both on solo home runs — over 27 innings of play.
Today, the Dodgers broke things open in the bottom of the second inning against Rockies starter Jon Gray when they pushed across three runs, first on a solo homer by Trayce Thompson, and later in the inning with a bases loaded walk from Gray handed to McCarthy, and then an RBI single from Justin Turner.
Gray settled down after that, allowing only those three runs in six innings of work, giving up six hits and three walks while striking out four batters. But with absolutely no offensive help of which to speak — the Rockies got just four hits on Sunday afternoon — Gray took the loss opposing McCarthy in the Dodger hurler's first game back from elbow reconstruction surgery in more than a year.
The Rockies answered back with their only run in the top of the seventh inning when Daniel Descalso hit a solo home run off Casey Fien, but Los Angeles immediately countered in the bottom half of that inning when Yasmani Grandal hit his own solo home run off Chad Qualls. The Rockies never mounted anything significant aside from that, collecting mere singles from DJ LeMahieu, Carlos Gonzalez, and Charlie Blackmon as their only other hits on the day.
Now, the club must go to San Francisco for a series starting Monday night against the Giants.
No rest for the weary.
