Yency Almonte is a legitimate name to watch

"Showtime" strikes out 11 Giants in a masterful Sunday performance for Modesto

Recently named as number eighteen on the midseason PuRPs list, Yency Almonte's season in Modesto has shattered even the highest expectations since his acquisition this past winter. That continued on Sunday night, as Almonte pitched seven shutout innings against the San Jose Giants, striking out eleven and only walking one. Almonte's high velocity fastball was perfect all night, he struck out seven of the Giants hitters, including Jonah Arenado twice.

The right handed pitcher was originally a 17th round draft pick by the Angels in 2012. He's since been traded twice, the last time for Tommy Kahnle, but Almonte's plus fastball and high potential has started to gather the eye of scouts as a pitcher who could reach as high of a ceiling as a consistent mid-rotation starter.

The 22-year-old lowered his ERA to 3.40 with the outing and raised his K/9 to a sterling 9.0. Almonte's arm may not be as talked about as much as Jeff Hoffman's or German Marquez's, but it's certainly not one to miss as the Rockies system continues to build towards the major leagues.
