Colorado Rockies prospects: Jose Gomez’s six RBI leads scoring explosion in Grand Junction

News and scores from around the Rockies minor league affiliates from Wednesday, August 10

The Grand Junction Rockies had an 11-run inning on Wednesday night, led by second baseman Jose Gomez. The G.J. Rockies were down 2-1 going into the bottom of the fifth before taking a commanding 10 run lead. Gomez started the scoring with a two-run single and ended it with a two-run triple, eventually coming around on a Colton Welker single for the 11th run of the inning. The 19-year-old went 4-for-5 with a double, a triple, six RBI and a stolen base for the game.

Gomez was signed in 2013 out of Venezuela and is in his first season outside of the Dominican Summer League. He’s already turning heads with his .362/.413/.441 slash line, earning him a Mid-Season All-Star selection in the Pioneer League. He’s outperforming his career line of .303/.369/.381, but he’s so young that improvement can only be expected. He is having a great year, but he’s improved offensively every year that he has been in the Rockies system and he will continue to do so when given the opportunity.
