Rockies prospect and No. 22 PuRP Tyler Nevin makes 2016 debut

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, August 16, 2016.

Tyler Nevin

There were a number of great performances around the farm last night. Kyle Freeland threw seven shutout innings for Albuquerque; Brendan Rodgers had a double and a homer in a come-from-behind victory for the Tourists; and Hidekel Gonzalez continued tearing through the Dominican Summer League. But none of these developments were quite as encouraging as seeing 2015 Competitive Balance Round pick and No. 22 PuRP Tyler Nevin back on the field for the Boise Hawks.

Nevin started the game at third base and led off the bottom of the second inning with a double on the first pitch he saw of the year. He scored two batters later on a single from Daniel Suero and then was pulled from the game in the top of the third. It’s unclear if this was merely a precaution or planned, but either way, hopefully Tyler will be back on the field again soon.

Nevin has be reportedly battling a hamstring injury, which is why he hasn’t made his debut until now. Last year in Grand Junction he hit .265/.368/.386 in 223 plate appearances as an 18-year-old. Despite a merely average performance (against competition nearly three years older than him on average) and not being on the field yet this season, he managed to make his way into the mid-season PuRPs list. According to the invaluable Rockies Roster, he is in Boise on a rehab assignment, so expect to see him finish out the year for the Asheville Tourists.

Today is a great day for farm watching, as no fewer than five PuRPs are scheduled to toe the rubber (plus Wander Cabrera may be taking the mound for DSL).
