Colorado Rockies prospects: Jeffri Ocando’s breakout continues

Colorado Rockies farm system scores and notes for Thursday, August 18th’s games

The Colorado Rockies have been one of the most underrated teams in the amateur international free agent market. While they have never spent over the pool allotment under the new system and made the splashy signings like other teams, they have produced quality class after quality class of prospects. This year’s team has looked ready to continue that legacy with previous year’s signees Anderson Amarista, Gabriel Estrada combining with recently acquired Wander Cabrera to form a dynamic rotation.

Jeffri Ocando has come out of nowhere to make the already impressive DSL Rockies’ rotation even better. Signed completely under the radar and late in the 2015-2016 class after his 17th birthday in May, Ocando made a delayed debut this year but has made up for the lost time by completely dominating the competition.

Ocando earned his third win against the DSL Tigers; pitching five innings, allowing only two hits, no runs and striking out five. For the season, Ocando now has a minuscule 0.39 ERA in 23 innings. He’s struck out 29 and walked only one while giving up 14 hits. After being almost completely missed in last year’s signing class, Ocando is now looking like he could be its biggest star.
