Jose Gomez hits two home runs, continues to destroy the Pioneer League

New, comments

The 19-year-old Venezuelan has been the best hitter on a powerful GJ lineup all season long

The Grand Junction Rockies won 10-6 on Sunday night after a terrific performance from young infielder Jose Gomez. The 19-year-old registered four hits, two for home runs, powering the Rockies to their 27th win of the season. The infielder hasn't generated the same amount of prospect hype as other players in the lineup such as Manuel Melendez or Colton Welker, but that may change with him posting a team leading .373 average, good for third in the Pioneer League.

Gomez has now recorded a hit in 20 of his last 22 games and knocked in 21 RBI over the past two weeks, solidifying himself as the best hitter in a strong lineup of high draft picks and top international prospects.

The Rockies signed Gomez as a 16-year-old out of Venezuela, but the shortstop was over shadowed by the signing of fellow Venezuelan Carlos Herrera that season and has long been a second fiddle in lineups with more hyped prospects, but the noise he's making as a hitter may be tough to ignore much longer.

Jose is obviously far enough away from the Majors that anything could happen between now and his projected debut, but the potential of a second tier IFA becoming an impact player is a huge plus in the organizations future plans and depth.
