Pitching prospect Ryan Castellani sharp again for Modesto

Rockies prospect and farm report for games from August 26, 2016.

At some point within the next few years, the Rockies could have three pitchers from the 2014 draft class serving as major contributors. The Rockies selected left-handed college-pitcher Kyle Freeland eighth overall in that draft. He's currently in Triple-A, so he should see the majors soon, even if his long term role is not yet defined. With the ninth pick, the Blue Jays selected Jeff Hoffman, and the Rockies later acquired him via trade. Hoffman's in the rotation now, and it doesn't look like he'll be leaving it any time soon. Then, in the second round and with the 48th pick of the draft, the Rockies went with Ryan Castellani, a righty high schooler out of Phoenix.

Castellani still has a couple years before the majors are possible, but he's giving the Rockies a lot to dream on. Castellani was sharp last night. For Modesto, he tossed 7.1 innings while allowing one hit, one run, and walking one. He struck out eight batters. Equipped with a fastball that sits in the low 90s coupled with a changeup and a slider, Castellani has posted a 3.65 ERA in High-A as a 20-year-old three years younger than the competition. In 162.2 innings, he's walked 2.7 batters per nine and has struck out 7.7. Nobody will mistake Castellani for a future ace; he's viewed as a future 4-5 starter. But teams need quality players there, too. If he fulfills that promise, he'll probably be the third contributor in the majors from a rich 2014 pitching class.
