Rockies prospect Helmis Rodriguez, Modesto bats dominate Lake Elsinore

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, August 30, 2016.

Helmis Rodriguez 2

The Modesto Nuts are doing everything they can to keep their playoff hopes alive, including their best offensive onslaught of the season. The Nuts (31-33; 57-77) have struggled all year on offense, averaging a league-low 4.12 runs per game with a .244 team batting average headed into Tuesday’s game. Nine innings later Modesto had sent 51 batters to the plate, amassing a season-high 23 hits on their way to a 12-2 victory over Lake Elsinore. Every batter (save for Forrest Wall) had at least two hits, but the team had just two extra-base hits and one walk.

That was plenty for Helmis Rodriguez last night. After the Nuts scored four runs in the top of the first Rodriguez (4-9, 3.41 ERA) made quick work of the Storm. He lasted seven innings allowing five hits and two walks against six strikeouts. Rodriguez has had a lot of success over his last three starts, going at least seven innings in each (22 IP, 14 H, 3 R/ER, 5 BB, 15 K).

After Tuesday night’s win, the Nuts are four games out of a playoff spot with six games to play and, along with the Albuquerque Isotopes (512 games out with seven to play) and Grand Junction Rockies (12 game up with nine to play) , are holding onto slim playoff hopes.
