There is an 18-year-old left handed pitcher toiling in relative anonymity in Dominican Summer League. He just missed the midseason Honorable Mention PuRP’s list—in fact, he was named on just 12 ballots. But he has the potential to be one of the most productive pitching products of the Rockies Dominican Academy.
Wander Cabrera continued his dominance of the Dominican Summer League on Wednesday, going five innings, allowing two runs on five hits and two walks with four strikeouts to lead the DSL Rockies to (another) win. He has only been permitted to go over five innings in a start once, but even on the limited work schedule he has been impressive. He leads the team with 38 ⅔ innings, 2.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 9.3 K/9. He’s also improved his walk rate to just 3.3 BB/9 to give him a stellar 2.86 K/BB ratio.
Cabrera, who was acquired in November from the Chicago Cubs in exchange for relief pitcher Rex Brothers, might not be long for the Dominican Summer League. Last year, as a 17-year-old playing against players on average two years older, threw 42 ⅔ innings for the DSL Cubs, making seven starts and 14 appearances with a 2.34 ERA, 1.25 WHIP, 10 K/9 and 4.9 BB/9. Clearly there was plenty there for the Rockies to like. Because this is his second year in the DSL, expect him to make his stateside debut for Grand Junction or Boise next June.
