A brief look at the Rockies relievers and what is in the pipeline

Let’s look at the relievers in the Rockies system. Just to see how well the Rockies stack up there.

MLB

Ottovino: 8.2 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.69 WHIP, 8/2 K/BB, Closer/setup man in future

Lyles: 17.1 relief innings pitched, 2.08 ERA, 1.10 WHIP, 9/2 K/BB, future long man

Rusin: 18.2 relief innings pitched, 2.41 ERA, 0.70 WHIP, 13/3 K/BB future LH long man

Miller: 35.1 IP, 5.35 ERA, 1.64 WHIP, 37/17 K/BB, possible DFA

German: 39.1 IP , 5.49 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 30/23 K/BB, possible DFA

McGee: 30.2 IP, 5.58 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 22/10 K/BB hasn’t been the same since injury, DL and rehab.

Qualls: 25.2 IP, 5.61 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, 14/6 K/BB possible DFA

Motte, 20.2 IP, 5.66 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 22/6 K/BB I think Rockies keep him as MR

The above are all the relievers that can’t be sent down and must be on the 40 man roster or DFAd

Logan: 31.0 IP, 3.19 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 34/12 K/BB Logan is only Free Agent and I don’t think he’ll be resigned.

Oberg: 18.2 IP, 3.38 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, 11/6 K/BB, will compete for spot in pen

Estevez: 38.1 IP, 3.76 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 43/17 K/BB, Closer/set up man with Otto

Castro, M. 14.2 IP, 6.14 ERA, 1.57 WHIP, 12/5 K/BB has the talent to compete but is having a down year.

Bergman: 13.1 IP, 6.75 ERA, 1.80 WHIP, 12/3 K/BB is a long man depth.

Gurka: 9.2 IP, 9.31 ERA, 1.86 WHIP, 7/2 K/BB look at his AAA numbers for a more accurate picture

The above all have options in 2017

AAA

Moll: 34.1 IP, 3.67 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, 26/12 K/BB will compete as LH reliever

Oberg: 29.2 IP, 2.43 ERA, 0.910 WHIP, 36/11 K/BB see above

Gurka: 21.1 IP, 1.69 ERA, 1.45 WHIP, 31/8 K/BB possible lefty specialist

Castro M: 13.2 IP, 8.56 ERA, 1.68 WHIP, 15/5 K/BB, see above

Carasiti: 5.0 IP, 0.00 ERA, 0.60 WHIP, 5/2 K/BB compete as set up/closer

There are others that will become Rule 5 eligible that may compete for a long relief such as Carle and Flemer

AA

Wade: 38.2 IP relief innings, 3.96 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, 23/16 K/BB swingman is better as a reliever

Jiminian: 46.0 IP, 2.15 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 38/18 K/BB former starter has been good at relief

Carasiti: 39.0 IP, 2.31 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, 43/7 K/BB see above voted best RP in EL by BA.

Gonzalez R.: 38.0 IP, 2.84 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, 38/18 K/BB

Vasto: 18.1 IP, 2.45 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 23/10 K/BB

A+

Rodriguez H: 50.2 Relief IP, 3.55 ERA, 1.09 WHIP, 37/13 K/BB Helmis has been much better as a reliever

Vasto: 26 IP, 1.38 ERA, 0.92 WHIP, 36/7 K/BB

There was a couple 25 year old RPs that were decent but I didn’t include them because 25. There is also Polonco who will probably be a reliever going forward.

A Justo (21): 31.1 IP, 1.15 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 24/14 K/BB

Guillen (20): 30.2 IP, 2.35 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, 29/11 K/BB

Thoele (23): 29.1 IP, 2.15 ERA, 1.26 WHIP, 30/14 K/BB. For context, this is similar to 2015 Vasto as far as age to level and production.

Bowden (21): 11.2 IP, 5.4 ERA, 2.23 WHIP, 12/11 K/BB

Conclusion: Just as we have seen in 2016 some new prospects hit the MLB level as relievers, the system is set up to have 2 or 3 very good relievers hitting the Rockies every year for the next few years.
