Colorado Rockies prospects: Ryan McMahon breaks up no-hitter, hits go-ahead homer in extras

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Wednesday, August 31, 2016.

Ryan McMahon

The Hartford Yard Goats, desperate for some offensive output, got it from their highly touted third baseman Wednesday night. The Yard Goats were facing Matt Gage, a 10th-round pick of the San Francisco Giants, who was tossing a no-hitter until Ryan McMahon faced him in the seventh. He reached on an infield single to break up Gage’s no-hitter.

McMahon’s offensive output continued in the eleventh inning with the game tied at two. He drove an opposite field home run over the left field wall, putting the Yard Goats ahead for good.

McMahon’s first half of the season was .. not good. His .231/.313/.369 slash line was not pretty and showed his struggles to adjust to the nomadic life of the Yard Goats and the talent of Double-A ball. His post-All-Star line of .263/.349/.461 is an improvement, but still not where we, and assuredly he, wants it to be. The good news is the power came back; a .369 slugging percentage is bad for anyone, but especially for a power hitter. McMahon still has tons of potential, but he’s going to need to prove that he can handle Double-A talent first.
