The Grand Junction Rockies now find themselves two wins away from a playoff berth after a 10-7 victory over Orem on Sunday. The Rockies offense was powered by eight RBI from Jose Gomez, Vince Fernandez, and fourth round draft pick Colton Welker.
Gomez added to his team leading RBI total, now at 51, and pushed his average up to .366. Gomez’ 94 hits lead the Pioneer League, the 19-year-old Venezuelan continues to impress as the best hitter in a deep lineup.
Welker has thus far been the 2016 draft pick paying the most early dividends for the club, the 18-year-old third baseman is hitting .318 in his first pro season with five home runs and 13 doubles.
The Rockies finish the season with a four game set against the second place Ogden Raptors. The Rockies currently hold a 1 1⁄2 game lead on Ogden and need to only split the series to clinch a playoff spot. The Rockies would join the DSL squad as the only affiliates to participate in the 2016 postseason for the organization.
