Grand Junction loses slugfest, on brink of elimination

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, September 6, 2016

The Grand Junction Rockies are the only affiliate left playing baseball on the Colorado Rockies farm. If they’d like to continue playing after Thursday they will have to win their next two games.

The Rockies lost to the Ogden Raptors on Tuesday by the score of 12-10, dropping them 12 game behind the Raptors in the Pioneer League South division standings. One more loss will eliminate them from playoff contention.

The Rookie Rockies found themselves down 6-1 after four innings and 11-1 after six. They would have been excused for packing it in and living to fight another day, but instead they staged (what would have been) a comeback for the ages. 2016 draftee Vince Fernandez led off the inning with a double and later came around to score on a double from Pedro Gonzalez (No. 21 PuRP). The Rockies would score five in the inning, but the rally was cut short after Jose Gomez got caught wandering off third base for the second out.

Ogden tacked on an unearned run in the top of the eighth and the Rockies managed to score four more in the bottom half, but that was all they could do; Ogden struck out the side in the bottom of the ninth to end the game.

The Rockies and Raptors play again Wednesday at 7:05 pm MT at Suplizio Field. If Odgen wins they clinch the second half division title. Grand Junction’s season rests on the shoulders of 2016 first round draft pick and no. 4 PuRP Riley Pint. Pint takes the hill the day after his 19th birthday looking for just his second professional win.
