Colorado Rockies prospect Ryan McMahon continues his hot start

Prospect news and notes from the Rockies minor league affiliates for April 12, 2017

It was a tough day overall for the Colorado Rockies’ Double-A affiliate Hartford Yard Goats on Wednesday night, but that wasn’t the case for No. 7 PuRP Ryan McMahon.

The 22-year-old infielder—he has started four games at first base, two at third base, and one at second base so far in 2017—went 2-for-3 with a walk to continue his hot start after a tough first season in Double-A. McMahon is now hitting .370/.400/.593 through his first 30 plate appearances of the season and has cut his strikeout rate nearly in half, from 30.1 percent in 2016 to 16.7 percent in 2017.

This, of course, is a very small sample size and just a few bad games would drop him right back to where he was in 2016, but of course both he and the Rockies hope that isn’t the case. If he can keep up this kind of success, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get a promotion to Triple-A Albuquerque before the season is up.
