The Colorado Rockies have activated Ian Desmond from the disabled list this morning. He’s making his first start for the team against the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon in left field.
Desmond was shelved after being hit by a pitch and breaking his metatarsal in his left hand during spring training. He had surgery on his hand and has been rehabilitating in extended spring training in Arizona over the past few days. In one of those games, Desmond hit four doubles in seven plate appearances while playing left field and first base.
When the Rockies signed Desmond, the club indicated that one of Desmond’s appeals was that he’s versatile. They also said that he would be their first baseman. With Mark Reynolds playing so well at first, it looks like the Rockies are going to tap into Desmond’s versatility instead of instilling him at the cold corner.
To make room on the active roster for Desmond, the Rockies designated for assignment utility infielder Cristhian Adames. Adames is hitless in 14 plate appearances across 12 games and only one start. Hes served primarily as a pinch hitter and late innings replacement. He has zero options remaining after spending the past four seasons bouncing between Triple-A and the Rockies.
