After taking the first two games of the series behind some brilliant bullpen work, the Colorado Rockies hand the ball to Tyler Chatwood in hopes of moving to 3-0 for the fifth time in franchise history, while the Milwaukee Brewers turn to Wily Peralta as they attempt to pick up their first win of the year.
Chatwood, a 27-year-old righty, went 12-9 with a 3.87 ERA (126 ERA+) across 27 starts and 158 innings in 2016 and was a road warrior, compiling a league-best 1.69 ERA away from the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. His peripheral stats, however, suggest he was the beneficiary of some good luck, and his FIP of 4.32, xFIP of 4.37, and SIERA of 4.62 are likely more in the range of what we should expect from him going forward. The Rockies will need some length from him tonight after asking Mike Dunn, Carlos Estevez, Greg Holland, and Adam Ottavino to pitch in each of their first two games.
Peralta, another 27-year-old, is coming off an uneven 2016 season. The hard throwing righty put together a 7-11 record and 4.86 ERA (88 ERA+) across 23 starts and 127 2/3 innings and was demoted to Triple-A Colorado Springs in mid-June after struggling to a 6.68 ERA and only 5.7 strikeouts per 9 innings in his first 13 starts. Peralta returned to Milwaukee after making 10 starts in Triple-A and seemed to having figured something out, as evidenced by his 2.92 ERA and 7.4 strikeouts per nine innings across his final 10 starts of the year.
The Rockies, aside from Chatwood, are running out the same starting lineup and batting order as they have in their first two games. Hey, if it ain't broke don't fix it, right? The Brewers, on the other hand, will give Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Hernan Perez, and Manny Pina their first starts of the season in center field, right field, and at catcher, respectively, while Eric Thames returns to the lineup at first base against the right-handed Chatwood.
First pitch of this one is scheduled for 6:10 pm mountain time.
