Rockies’ Tyler Anderson scratched from start, Jeff Hoffman called up

Hoffman will be starting tonight against the Dodgers

Update 5/11 3:52 pm MT

Rather than option or DFA a reliever, the Rockies have placed Trevor Story on the 10-day DL with a strained left shoulder. The Rockies will have 14 pitchers and only 11 hitters available for tonight’s game.

The Colorado Rockies have scratched expected starter Tyler Anderson from tonight’s game, according to Jesse Thomas of the Colorado Rockies Radio Network. Jeff Hoffman will take his place and start the series opener against the Los Angeles Dodgers tonight.

The Rockies appear to be monitoring Anderson’s knee. He tweaked it in his start on Sunday, his best start of the season so far. According to the AP, Anderson threw off of flat ground today under the watch of a trainer. The injury doesn’t seem serious. Tyler Chatwood will still pitch tomorrow and Anderson is now scheduled to start Saturday’s game, with two days of extra rest, according to a tweet from Patrick Saunders.

Jeff Hoffman is still the Rockies top pitching prospect according to Baseball America’s top 100 list updated list that was released today. He will join fellow rookies Antonio Senzatela, Kyle Freeland and Germán Márquez in what is quickly becoming an all-rookie rotation.

Hoffman’s presence on the 25-man roster will necessitate a corresponding move. He was on the team for the doubleheader against the Cubs, but that was when the Rockies had a 26th man option. Scott Oberg is a likely option to get optioned to Triple-A. Another possibility would be for the Rockies to DFA Chad Qualls or Jordan Lyles. However, because they may only need Hoffman on the active roster for a single start, optioning Oberg is more likely instead of losing potential depth.
