Colorado Rockies’ prospect Ryan Castellani has been better than it seems

Colorado Rockies minor league news and notes from May 17, 2017.

Wednesday’s action on the Colorado Rockies’ farm system brought an organizational sweep as the Triple-A Albuquerque Isotopes, Double-A Hartford Yard Goats, and High-A Lancaster JetHawks all brought home victories.

On the mound for Hartford was No. 9 PuRP Ryan Castellani. The 21-year-old righty allowed five earned runs on eight hits in five innings and saw his ERA balloon to 6.37 on the season and has now allowed 11.6 hits per nine innings. That isn’t great, but there are some other numbers that suggest he’s run into some bad luck along the way.

First and foremost, Castellani has struck out 42 hitters in 41 innings of work (21.5 percent overall) and has gotten swings and misses 10.8 percent of the time, higher than the league average of 10 percent. These numbers tell us he probably hasn’t become more hittable this season and that his .372 BABIP against is more a product of luck than anything. He has also had some poor luck with home runs, as he has allowed five so far despite a batted ball profile that suggests he should have allowed only three. All of this adds up to an FIP, xFIP, and xRA (expected run average) of 4.25, 3.54, and 4.33, respectively. Those numbers will work just fine for someone who is more than three years younger than the average player in his league.
