The Colorado Rockies have succeeded this season in spite of a rash of injuries to key players. While Ian Desmond and Tony Wolters have returned from their respective injuries, the Rockies have been patiently waiting for the return of the rest of their key players.
Jon Gray was placed on the DL with a stress fracture in his left foot on April 14 with the expectation that he’d be out at least a month. It’s now looking like he’ll miss roughly two months. Bud Black was on MLB Network Radio this morning and said that they will reevaluate his foot when the Rockies get home from their current road trip and that he may be 2-3 weeks away from returning to the Rockies.
Rockies outfielder David Dahl has been hoping to finally take batting practice on the field since the beginning of the Reds series as one of the final steps before going on a rehab assignment. Unfortunately the bad weather that’s been following the Rockies has precluded the Rockies as a whole from taking outdoor batting practice so he’s been stuck in a hold pattern. Hopefully the weather will cooperate today so he can finally participate. Due to Dahl missing not just the entire season, but also almost the entirety of spring training, expect a lengthy rehab assignment before he returns to the Rockies outfield.
Trevor Story has already played four games with the Albuquerque Isotopes on his rehab assignment for a shoulder injury. Story was placed on the DL on May 11 and is expected to join the Rockies in Philadelphia and maybe as soon as tonight.
Finally, relief pitcher Jairo Diaz is still working his way back from a torn UCL and resulting Tommy John surgery, but a personal bump in the road has kept him out of action indefinitely. Diaz, health wise, is fine, according to Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post. But he’ll apparently remain away from the team for the foreseeable future.
Diaz was officially optioned to Triple-A Albuquerque on April 29 and placed on the temporarily inactive list three days later.
