Matt Carasiti (HM PuRP) undoubtedly had a rough MLB debut last fall. Those struggles resulted in him even being non-tendered at the deadline last winter. After declaring minor-league free agency, Carasiti resigned with the Rockies in hopes of getting a second chance. While he’s yet to get that second chance, he’s been doing a great job of trying to force the Rockies into giving him one.
Through last night’s game, Carasiti has struck out 22 in 16 1⁄3 innings while earning 11 saves as the Albuquerque Isotopes closer. There are still some struggles with command as evidenced by the eight walks surrendered, but his prolific strike out rate has allowed him to limit the damage to the tune of a 1.10 ERA.
Last night, Carasiti struck out all three batters he faced on 12 pitches in his most dominating outing of the young season. If Carasiti can fine tune his control, his stuff is good enough to play in a high-leverage role for the Rockies.
Carasiti is still behind Carlos Estevez on the depth chart for major-league call ups when the Rockies need an extra reliever. However, after Estevez, Carasiti might very well be next on the list which means there’s a decent chance we will see him again this year.
