The Colorado Rockies and reigning National League rookie of the month Antonio Senzatela are set to take on the San Diego Padres at Petco Park on Wednesday night. The 22-year-old rookie wrapped up the first month of his career with a 2.81 ERA (181 ERA+) and just seven walks in 32 innings of work. Opposite Senzatela is Jered Weaver, a 34-year-old righty who has managed to keep a big league job despite a fastball that has averaged just 83.9 miles per hour so far in 2017. In spite of this, Weaver has managed to put up a somewhat respectable 4.71 ERA (89 ERA+) in his first five starts of the year.
On the other side of things, the Rockies are running out what many would consider an odd lineup for the second night in a row. Gerardo Parra starts in left field and Ian Desmond again will start at first base, leaving Mark Reynolds and his .292/.355/.594 (129 wRC+) slash line on the bench. With Parra hitting just .276/.313/.421 (78 wRC+) in 2017 and .257/.278/.403 (60 wRC+) since the beginning of last season, it would seem logical to leave him on the bench with Desmond in left field and Reynolds at first base. Alas, this is not the case. Alexi Amarista is also giving Trevor Story the night off at shortstop while Dustin Garneau fills in at catcher after Tony Wolters was placed on the 7-day concussion DL earlier today.
Aside from the pitcher, San Diego will run out the same starting lineup and batting order as last night, which makes some sense as they scored six runs (albeit on just five hits) in the game.
First pitch in this one is scheduled for 8:10 pm mountain time.
