It was a busy day in the Colorado Rockies’ farm system, as all four of their full season affiliates were in action on Wednesday. The highlight of the day was a second consecutive strong start by No. 2 PuRP Jeff Hoffman. The 24-year-old righty allowed only two earned runs on four hits in six innings. He walked just one, struck out five, and lowered his ERA on the season to 3.71. Hoffman now has an impressive 2.90 strikeout-to-walk ratio on the year, slightly better than his mark of 2.82 a year ago, mostly thanks to a walk rate that has dropped from 3.3 per nine innings in 2016 to 2.6 per nine innings so far in 2017. At the moment, there are no open spots in the starting rotation, but one would think Hoffman is next in line when the opportunity presents itself.
Meanwhile, in Double-A, No. 12 PuRP Yency Almonte got off to another good start as he held the Portland Sea Dogs scoreless for the first 22⁄3 innings to lower his ERA on the season to 1.37. Unfortunately, he would have to leave the game at that point with right shoulder inflammation. The good news is the injury is believed to be minor and Almonte isn’t expected to miss his next start.
