19-year-old Colton Welker terrorized Rome Braves pitching all night on Monday night, going 4-for-4 with a double and a walk. Behind Welker and pitching Antonio Santos, the Tourists cruised to a 7-0 win.
Santos, an import from the Dominican academy last season, pitched one of his best games as a Tourist with 8 Ks in 6 2/3 scoreless innings. The 20-year-old pitcher was already highly regarded by Tourists coaching and has kept up a very encouraging strikeout rate to match that praise.
Santos was aided by a big night from the top of the Tourists order. Including Welker, Manuel Melendez, Jose Gomez, and Vince Fernandez added 10 of the 12 Asheville hits on the night. The young hitters at the top of the Asheville lineup are proving to be some of the more exciting players in the Rockies system this season.
