The 2017 MLB Amateur Draft is in the books. The Rockies made 40 picks total in this year’s draft, the first one coming in the second round at 48th overall, Ryan Tilade, a third baseman out of Stillwater (Okla.) High School. The next pick came in Compensation Round B when the Rockies selected University of Virginia righthander Tommy Doyle 70th overall.
Each of the Rockies’ next 32 picks, including all eight on Day 2, came from the college ranks and the Rockies only drafted six high schoolers in total, a new low in the Bridich Era, who seems to be continuing the trend of prioritizing older, more developed talent.
As such, there is high expectation that most of the Rockies’ draftees, save for those late-round high schoolers, will sign with the team.
