Pedro Gonzalez opens GJ Rockies season with 3-hit night

Pioneer League Opening Day sees a typical offensive explosion

The Grand Junction Rockies became the last minor league affiliate to start their season on Monday night, losing 8-7 to the Idaho Falls Chukars in ten innings.

With the Rockies not having a first round pick, the most exciting players on the rookie league squad will likely come from the Dominican Academy. Last night, an Academy graduate got off to an impressive start. 19-year-old Pedro Gonzalez finished 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBI. Gonzalez is back in Grand Junction after a middling 2016, but after signing for 1.3 million dollars in 2014 the prospect shine has not yet worn off this exciting outfielder.

The Rockies also got a dazzling American debut from Venezuelan pitcher Jorge Oviedo. After three great seasons in the Dominican Summer League, Oviedo debuted in Grand Junction with three innings out of the bullpen, striking out five and surrendering no runs.
