Colorado Rockies prospect Matt Pierpont has an impressive game

Colorado Rockies minor league news and notes from June 21, 2017.

Wednesday was a quiet day on the Colorado Rockies’ farm system, with three of their four full season teams getting the day off and only two of the top 30 PuRPs in action. One Rockies farmhand who was in action was Matt Pierpont, who had a banner day for Double-A Hartford Yard Goats in their 7-3 win over the Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Pierpont, a 26th round draft pick in 2013, tossed three scoreless innings with no walks and three strikeouts and threw in an RBI double at the plate for good measure. The outing lowered his ERA to a minuscule 1.09 on the year. He also sports an impressive 20-to-3 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The 26-year-old is spending his second straight season in Double-A despite some impressive numbers in 2016 (2.94 ERA, 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings). At 26 years old, he’s just over a year and a half older than the average player in Double-A, and time is surely not on his side. That being said, the Rockies will be hard-pressed to not give him a chance at a higher level if he’s able to keep up this level of performance.
