Colorado Rockies prospect and no. 9 PuRP Ryan Castellani has had an up and down year for the Hartford Yard Goats, and Tuesday continued that trend. On one hand, he took the loss after the Yard Goats offense couldn’t push a run across for him. On the other, he went six innings, allowing just one earned run while striking out seven.
It was an important bounce back for Castellani, who had allowed a combined 17 earned runs over his previous 152⁄3 innings pitched spanning three starts. That performance had ballooned his ERA up to 5.61, though that’s not the highest it’s been this season. He gave up five runs over five innings to the Portland Sea Dogs on May 11, pushing his ERA up to 6.37. He seemed to be turning it around, allowing just three total runs over his next three starts, before he hit the aforementioned rough patch.
Castellani’s peripherals are still mostly in line with his career norms; he has a 74:26 K/BB in 842⁄3 innings. However, his HR/FB rate has skyrocketed to 12.0%, about twice his previous career high. This could be a case of Dunkin Donuts Park playing as more of a hitter’s park, or Castellani has hit a string of misfortune. Time will tell if he’s able to rebound in the second half of the season.
