Colorado Rockies’ prospect Ryan McMahon is putting his name back on the map. After a rough 2016 season that saw McMahon take a tumble on many top prospect list, the 22-year-old is back to mashing. After a .329/.390/.536 slash line in 205 plate appearances at Double-A Hartford earned him a promotion to Triple-A Albuquerque, the No. 7 PuRP hasn’t missed a beat. After two more hits on Wednesday night, McMahon sports a .346/.438/.462 slash line in his first 32 plate appearances for the Isotopes with more walks (5) than strikeouts (4). That’s the good news.
The bad news for McMahon is that, in spite of the increased versatility he’s shown this season in playing three infield positions, the presence of Nolan Arenado, DJ LeMahieu, Mark Reynolds, and Ian Desmond means there’s currently no place for him on the big league roster. This isn’t necessarily a bad thing, as it allows the Rockies to be patient with his development while also providing a viable option for a replacement should one of those guys go down with an injury. At any rate, McMahon’s resurgence so far in 2017 adds to the myriad of reasons Rockies fans should be excited about the future as well as the present.
