There were no stateside games in the Rockies system yesterday, so as to not compete with the All-Star Game for the eyeballs of the baseball watching public. And, since DSL Rockies got blown out 10-0, let’s talk about tonight’s games!
The Triple-A All-Star game tends to be a fairly sad affair for fans. Most of the top prospects who have been playing in Triple-A tend to have spent time on their organization’s major league roster, rendering them ineligible for the game. So you end up with a roster full of players who have peaked as “Quad-A” players or ones who are still playing ball as their career winds to a close. There’s a reason some people call it the Anti-Futures Game.
Don’t tell that to the players who are participating, though. One thing that makes the Triple-A All-Star Game unique is it brings together the International League and the Pacific Coast League for Triple-A dominance. That means one roster for all of the PCL and one for the IL. Only one Rockies farmhand, then, made the team: outfielder Noel Cuevas. The eight-year MiLB veteran is having the best season of his stateside career, hitting .315/.347/.500 for the Isotopes in 326 plate appearances with 11 home runs, eight triples, and eight doubles with 15 stolen bases. The game takes place at Cheney Stadium, home of Seattle’s Tacoma Rainers, at 7:05 pm MT.
The Double-A Eastern League is also having their All-Star Game tonight. The Yard Goats are sending four players to represent the Eastern League East Division: starting pitcher Yency Almonte (no. 11 PuRP, 2-3, 1.96 ERA, 44/19 K:BB, 46 IP), Shane Broyles (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 41/12 K:BB, 30 IP), Ashley Graeter (.255/.285/.395), and Drew Weeks (.251/.322./401). The game takes place at Northest Delta Dental Stadium, home of Toronto’s New Hampshire FisherCats, at 5:05 pm MT.
Despite playing for both teams, Ryan McMahon was not eligible for either the Triple-A or the Double-A All-Star Games.
