Rockies pitcher Chad Bettis returns to the mound in Yard Goats loss

Colorado Rockies prospect report and game results from July 13, 2017.

Colorado Rockies starter Chad Bettis made his long-awaited return to the mound Thursday for the Double-A Hartford Yard Goats.

Bettis pitched two hitless innings for the Yard Goats, allowing an unearned run and striking out three. He threw 31 pitches, 19 for strikes against the Trenton Thunder, the Yankee’s Double-A affiliate.

The run Bettis allowed came in the first, when Thunder leadoff hitter Jorge Mateo reached on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a fielder’s choice and scored on a sacrifice fly.

Also in the first inning, Bettis got Yankees All-Star second baseman Starlin Castro, also on rehab assignment, to line out to third baseman Josh Fuentes.

After beating testicular cancer that eventually spread to his lymph nodes, Bettis began his return to action last month, throwing bullpens and live batting practice before returning to game action in Hartford. He will likely have several more rehab starts at Hartford and likely Triple-A Albuquerque before returning to the Rockies.
