Rockies reinstate Ian Desmond, place Tyler Chatwood on DL

The Rockies made a roster move before Sunday’s game

The Rockies announced that they have re-instated outfielder/first baseman Ian Desmond from the disabled list. In a corresponding move, they placed starting pitcher Tyler Chatwood on the DL.

The Rockies placed Desmond on the DL on July 3 with a right calf strain. He’s been with the team, and there was some thought he’d be activated on Friday or Saturday. Perhaps the Rockies weren’t sure what their corresponding move would be, but Chatwood made it easy for them. Chatwood had a right calf strain himself in Saturday’s game, and now he’ll take Desmond’s spot on the DL.

At the moment, the Rockies only have four starters on the 25-man roster—Jeff Hoffman, Jon Gray, Germán Márquez, and Kyle Freeland. Freeland pitched out of the bullpen on Saturday, but he’s listed as a starter on today’s lineup card. Antonio Senzatela can be recalled at any time to make it five. The Rockies have a five-man bench today as well. That’s all to say that there should be another move very soon.
