Yesterday, we highlighted two early round picks from the Colorado Rockies 2017 MLB draft class tearing up the Pioneer League for Grand Junction. Today, we’d like you to take note of two middle round picks from the Colorado Rockies 2017 draft class tearing up the Northwest League for Boise. If you haven’t already, they just may warrant inclusion on your Midseason 2017 PuRPs ballot.
Daniel Jipping had a superb night as the Boise Hawks defeated the Tri-City Dust Devils, 10-3. Jipping, a 22nd round pick out of Central Michigan, went 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI and a walk. The right-handed left fielder has made a name for himself so far in 20 games for the Hawks; he is hitting .276/.382/.684 with nine home runs already, plus nine walks and two stolen bases.
But he’s not the only 2017 draftee to power through Short Season ball. Sean Bouchard (ninth round, UCLA) is also part of a power surge that has Boise at 19-14 and tied for first in the Northwest League South division. Despite going 0-for-4 on Tuesday, Bouchard is hitting .379/.429/.603 in 13 games for the Hawks. He was well regarded for his hit tool but drafted highly because of his potential power bat. Don’t look now, but the Rockies may have finally found a power-hitting first baseman in the system.
