Two Rockies’ pitching prospects had different days on each coast yesterday. On the west coast, Peter Lambert gave up eight hits and three runs in six innings of work. He walked one, struck out five, and allowed a home run. It might not seem like a great line, but he pitched in a friendly hitter environment, and he did strike out five in six innings. On the east coast, Parker French had a day that can’t be gussied up with qualifiers. He gave up eight hits and seven runs in 31⁄3 innings. He walked just two, but he also struck out just one. And worst of all, he allowed four home runs.
Willie Abreu, who is something of a fringe prospect in the Rockies’ system, had the best offensive night last night. He had four hits, including three doubles, for Asheville. The Rockies selected Abreu in the sixth round of the 2016 draft out of Miami. The 22-year-old lefty outfielder will never be a top prospect, but he very well could be the next Mike Tauchman—a guy passing under the radar who cracked a major-league roster.
Finally, an update: Brendan Rodgers was hit in the heat with a pitch yesterday during the fifth inning of the Yard Goats’ first game. It was a scary moment, but Rodgers is okay, according to William Boor of MLB.com and MLBPipeline.com. Still, it wouldn’t be surprising if he sits out today’s contest.
