Rockies prospects Ryan Vilade, Shael Mendoza named to Pioneer League All-Star team

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, July 25, 2017.

Rockies affiliates went 0-8 on Tuesday, thanks to a double-header sweep of the Yard Goats, but there was some good news to come out of the farm.

The Grand Junction Rockies had two players named to the starting lineup for the Pioneer League All-Star Game (full rosters here). 2017 second round pick (and likely future PuRP) Ryan Vilade earned the starting shortstop honor and Shael Mendoza will man the keystone for the Pioneer League when they take on the Northwest League on Tuesday, August 1 in Hillsboro, Oregon. Michael Agis, who has 14 strikeouts and a 1.29 ERA in 14 innings pitched, also made the squad.

Vilade, who was the Rockies first pick in the 2017 MLB Draft at 48th overall, came out of Stillwater (Okla.) High School and has torn up the Pioneer League ever since. In 23 games he’s hitting .321/.452/.560 with five home runs and a 23:19 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Mendoza has had a similarly impressive year, hitting .372/.425/.554 with three home runs, two triples, nine doubles, and 19 stolen bases in 28 games for Grand Junction. Mendoza finished 45th in our latest PuRPs ballot, but if he keeps it up he may be able to crack the top 30 this offseason.
