Update: 7:55 pm MT:
The player to be named later cannot be a 2017 draftee under the current rules. Draftees cannot be traded or designated as a player to be named later in any trades completed before the conclusion of the World Series in the year that they were drafted.
Update 7:47 pm MT:
The Rockies are taking on the entirety of Lucroy’s remaining salary this season. This means that the player to be named later will be of lesser quality than if the Rangers had paid for any of the remaining contract.
Also, the Rockies had an empty 40-man roster spot after designating Jordan Lyles for assignment yesterday so no move to open a spot is needed; however, the Rockies will need to make an active roster spot available before their next game on Tuesday. Tony Wolters or Ryan Hanigan will be the most likely casualties, as the Rockies will be extremely unlikely to carry three catchers on their already short bench. Wolters can be optioned, but Hanigan would have to accept an assignment to Triple-A because of his service time accrued. He’s already done that once this season.
Update 7:32 pm MT:
It’s official. The Colorado Rockies have acquired Jonathan Lucroy for a player to be named later.
The Colorado Rockies have made their second acquisition before tomorrow’s trade deadline. Ken Rosenthal is reporting that the Rockies have traded for Texas Rangers catcher Jonathan Lucroy.
The 31-year-old Lucroy is in the midst of his worst season at the plate. He’s hitting just .242/.297/.338, for a wRC+ of 66. That’s well below his career .280/.339/.433 batting line, which translates to a 108 wRC+.
Jerry Crasnick is reporting that the Rockies will be sending a player to be named later in exchange for Lucroy
This is the second consecutive deadline that Lucroy has been dealt, as he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Texas Rangers last season. Lucroy was packaged with reliever Jeremy Jeffress in exchange for outfielder Lewis Brinson, pitcher Luis Ortiz, and a player to be named later from the Rangers. This year’s package should be considerably less as he is a free agent after this season and has performed at a considerably lower level this season.
