MLB trade deadline: Colorado Rockies rumors, live updates and discussion

Will the Rockies make another move?

Update 2:23 pm MT

While there has been a flurry of trades announced after the deadline none of them involved the Rockies. Yu Darvish and Tony Cingrani were traded to the Dodgers in separate deals, Joaquin Benoit was traded to the Pirates and Tim Beckham was trade to the Orioles.

Update 2:06 pm MT

Patrick Saunders is reporting that the Rockies are done. Brandon Kintzler trade was announced after the deadline but he ended up with the Nationals not the Rockies. It appears that the Rockies choose to stand pat today after picking up Neshek and Lacroy earlier

Update 2:00 pm MT

The deadline has come and the Rockies have not been involved in any trade announced yet. Trade could still be announced after 2 pm if they were submitted to the league office before the deadline. There are also trades that can be still completed though the revocable waivers process.

Update 1:55 pm MT

Five minutes left till the deadline and still no Rockies news

Update 1:39 pm MT

Two more relievers are off the market and two of the Rockies NL West rivals are the recipients. David Hernandez is headed to the Diamondbacks and Tony Watson is going to the Dodgers.

Update 1:30 pm MT

Add the Angel’s David Hernandez to the list of relief options that may be dealt in the next 30 minutes. There is no link to any team in Joel Sherman’s report so anything is possible.

Update 1:20 pm MT

With 40 minutes left, the Rockies are still silent. However, another relief arm is off the market as Joe Smith heads back to Cleveland.

Update 1:02 pm MT

With an hour to go till the deadline the first big domino finally falls. Jeff Passan is reporting that the Oakland A’s have traded Sonny Gray to the Yankees for Dustin Fowler, Jorge Mateo and James Kaprelian. This may open up the gates for more trade to be completed.

Update 12:55 pm MT

The Brandon Kintzler trades are in the “red zone” according to Jerry Crasnick. There is no indication as to who the other teams is at this point, which could easily mean it’s the Rockies with their preference for silent moves.

Update 12:15 pm MT

There has been one trade officially completed today: the Adam Rosales trade to the Diamondbacks. There are three more that have been rumored to be completed but have not been made official yet: the Boston Red Sox acquisition of Addison Reed, Houston trading for Francisco Liriano, and the Brewers reacquiring Jeremy Jeffress.

The possible big deals involving Sonny Gray, Zach Britton, Brad Hand and Yu Darvish are still alive but appear to be heading towards last minute resolutions. There could be cascading effects if any or all of those deals get completed which could make things extremely exciting coming down the stretch.

At this point, all is quiet with the Rockies again. The Rockies could still be hoping to sweep in at the last minute and pick up one more bargain before the deadline.

Update 10:59 am MT

Trade talks surrounding Kintzler may be heating up, but it might not be the Rockies involved as the Nationals are in active talks with the Twins according to Jon Morosi. This does not preclude the Rockies from still being involved, however.

Update 10:15 am MT

Jon Morosi is reporting that the Rockies are looking to still add another reliever. He offers no details as to who and also says nothing is imminent.

Update 10:10 am MT

The Rockies are interested in Brandon Kintzler according to Mike Berardino who covers the Minnesota Twins. The Nationals are the other team connected to Kintzler and the expectation is that the deal won’t be completed till the deadline.

Update 10:00 am MT:

There are no Rockies specific rumors yet this morning. As we have learned since the start of the Jeff Bridich era that may or may not mean anything. However, there has been one trade already this morning as the Boston Red Sox traded three prospects to the New York Mets in exchange of rental reliever Addison Reed.

The chances that both Sonny Gray and Yu Darvish are dealt before the deadline is also increasing and there are rumors that Yankees are the front-runners for Gray’s services and the Indians for Darvish with a package that includes the top catching prospect in the game.

As far as players that the Rockies may or may not be interested in, the MarlinsDan Straily and Brandon Kintzler of the Twins are both available and being shopped, though there is no connection between them and the Rockies at this point.

The Colorado Rockies have already made two big trades ahead of today’s trade deadline. First they acquired right-handed reliever Pat Neshek from the Philadelphia Phillies for three prospects. Last night, they added veteran catcher Jonathan Lacroy in a trade with the Rangers that cost them a player to be named later. However, the chatter from those who cover the team signals that the Rockies may not be done yet and that they could leverage their still loaded farm system and take advantage once again of this ridiculous buyer’s market.

At this point it seems likely that the Rockies would more likely target a player who can help the team past this season as both Neshek and Lacroy are rental acquisitions. Adding another reliever could put the final touches on a series of great acquisitions by Jeff Bridich.

The deadline to submit trades to MLB is 2 pm MT. There is always the slight chance that a trade can be submitted to the office before then, but not publicly announced or leaked until afterwards.
