Rockies prospect Riley Pint has encouraging outing

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, July 4, 2017.

It was a busy day for the Rockies’ farm system. Boise went 20 innings (imagine waiting for that fireworks show!), Sam Howard threw a star spangled gem for Albuquerque, and 2017 draft picks Ryan Vilade and Tommy Doyle made appearances for Grand Junction. But it was former fourth overall pick Riley Pint (no. 4 PuRP) had one of the most important outings of the day.

Pint has had an up-and-down full season debut. Due to the Rockies limiting his workload, Pint has thrown over 70 pitches in a game only three times in 13 starts, and never more than 75. Combined with his control struggles (31 walks in 5223 innings), he’s struggled to get much length in his outings. That was very different on Tuesday, as Pint went five innings and allowed just 1 run on five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. His strikeout to walk ratio now sits at 41:31 as he continues to refine his arsenal in a league where he is three years younger than the average player.

Despite pitching well, Pint was left with a no-decision due to the Tourists’ offense being unable to get a lead until the bottom of the eighth inning. Regis High School alumnus Max George reached on a walk, advanced to second on a balk, stole third, and then scored on a balk to give the Tourists the lead. Reid Humphreys worked around a single to secure the win.
