Colorado Rockies’ prospect Wes Rogers continues to dazzle with his speed

Colorado Rockies’ minor league news and notes from July 5, 2017.

It was a tough day for prominent prospects in the Colorado Rockies’ farm system. Nobody ranked in the top 20 on the most recent PuRPs list pitched or had a multi-hit day. One potential story worth watching, however, is prospect Wes Rogers’ prominence on the basepaths. The 23-year-old righty had a pair of hits and, perhaps more importantly, a pair of stolen bases for High-A Lancaster in their 5-4 win over Lake Elsinore. Rogers has now stolen 46 bases this season and been caught just eight times, a success rate of over 85 percent. This is essentially in line with his career numbers. He’s stolen 157 bases in 179 attempts across his minor league career, an even more impressive 88 percent success rate.

Given that he’s yet to reach even Double-A, it’s clearly too early to project him as an every day big leaguer. However, it isn’t a stretch to see him used similarly to the way the Kansas City Royals used Terrance Gore in their playoff runs during the 2014 and 2015 seasons. Gore was a September call-up in both seasons and was used almost exclusively as a pinch runner, he had only six total plate appearances across both seasons. However, he also stole eight bases without being caught and was added to the playoff roster each time, where he went 4-for-5 in stolen base attempts without taking a single plate appearance. If the Rockies are in a tight playoff race come September, don’t be surprised to see Rogers called up for exactly the same reason.
