Colorado Rockies prospect Ryan Vilade off to great start

The Rockies’ 2017 top pick had three hits as Grand Junction scores 18

Ryan Vilade, the Rockies’ first selection of the 2017 draft, is having a good time in the Pioneer league so far. The 48th overall pick is hitting just shy of .400 through his first 42 professional plate appearances. He has ten hits, including two home runs and a double, and has walked as many times as he’s struck out (eight).

His three hits last night were part of an 18 hit barrage against Orem. The Orem pitching couldn’t do anything right last night. They walked eleven Rockies hitters, but even when they were throwing strikes, they were getting burned. In total, Grand Junction scored 18 runs on the night, including 16 unanswered after trailing 6-2 early.

Vilade is the continuation of a recent trend in Rockies drafts: the early-round high-school third baseman:

  • 2017: Ryan Vilade, 2nd Round
  • 2016: Colton Welker, 4th Round
  • 2015: Tyler Nevin, 1st Round (Competitive Balance)
  • 2014: Kevin Padlo: 5th Round (don’t count him out)
  • ...
  • 2009: Nolan Arenado: 2nd Round

Vilade has played shortstop exclusively for Grand Junction, although scouts see him as a third-baseman long term. Here’s to hoping the Rockies found themselves another second-round star at the hot corner!
