Rockies’ Kyle Freeland activated from disabled list

Zac Rosscup optioned to make room

The Colorado Rockies activated Kyle Freeland from the 10-day disabled list before tonight’s game. To make room on the active roster, left-handed reliever Zac Rosscup was optioned. Freeland is expected to start tonight’s game after spending exactly 10 days on the disabled list with a strained groin.

This is the second consecutive day that the Rockies have optioned a reliever to make room for that night’s starting pitcher. Last night, Carlos Estevez was optioned to make room for Chad Bettis who pitched a masterful seven innings in his return.

The Rockies now have seven starting pitching options on their active roster in Bettis, Freeland, Jon Gray, Jeff Hoffman, German Marquez, Tyler Chatwood and Antonio Senzatela. Both Chatwood and Senzatela will be available out of the bullpen for at least tonight’s game and probably for the foreseeable future.

Freeland strained his groin in the first inning of his last start on August 4 and was placed on the disabled list the following day. Prior to the injury, Freeland had a 3.70 ERA in 121 23 innings for the Rockies. Hopefully he can return to form.
