Colorado Rockies prospects Ryan Vilade, Daniel Jipping involved in wild Pioneer-Northwest League All-Star Game

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, August 1, 2017.

Ryan McMahon is doing what he can to force his way onto the Rockies’ 25-man roster. The 22-year-old infielder received his second Pacific Coast League Player of the Week award on Monday, in addition to his PCL Player of the Month award for June. McMahon went 13-for-25 in six games last week with two doubles, a triple, and two home runs, with four of those six games being multi-hit efforts.

He had another hit and a walk in Tuesday’s extra innings victory over the Iowa Cubs and he scored the game winning run on a sacrifice fly from Jordan Patterson in the bottom of the 12th. Yency Almonte struggled a bit in his second Triple-A start, allowing three home runs—two to John Andreoli—that made the final line a little uglier than it would have been otherwise.

Meanwhile, Rockies prospects were on both sides of the ball last night for the Pioneer League vs. Northwest League All-Star Game. Daniel Jipping (22nd round, 2017) won the pre-game home run derby where all the Pioneer League participants were lefties and all the Nothwest Leaguers were righties. Jipping was later involved in a strange sequence during the actual game. It was 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth; from the MiLB recap:

Then things took a strange turn. Billings' Moises Nova relieved Capps and walked Spokane's Tyler Ratliff, who was hitting for Home Run Derby winner Daniel Jipping. But Jipping batted next anyway, drawing a walk to load the bases. Nobody on the Pioneer League side protested, so the inning continued and Nova issued bases-loaded walks to Hillsboro's Daulton Varsho and Boise's Steven Linkous to put the Northwest ahead.

The Northwest League went on to win 5-4. Ryan Vilade and Shael Mendoza had both also singled and scored for the Pioneer League in the second inning, and Mendoza added two stolen bases to boot.
