Rockies prospect Garrett Hampson has big night for Lancaster

Prospect news and game results from the Rockies minor league affiliates from Tuesday, August 22, 2017.

The Lancaster JetHawks went off for nine runs against the Inland Empire 66ers on Tuesday, and Rockies prospect (and no. 13 PuRP) played a big role.

The middle infield prospect has had a bit of a breakout season for the JetHawks that continued on Tuesday, as he finished a home run short of the cycle. In all Hampson went 4-for-5 and also tallied an RBI and a run scored. They needed all nine of their runs, as Inland Empire staged a comeback in the later stages of the game to cut the JetHawks’ lead from five to one. Reliever Alexander Guillien was able to slam the door in the ninth, pitching a clean inning with one strikeout to secure his tenth save of the season.

When he was drafted last June somebody on this site, who shall be named later, decided to highlight scouting reports that he was a “quintessential scrappy gamer type,” perhaps leading some to consider Hampson as more grit than talent. While he’s still a long way from the majors, he’s proven that he, indeed, has “some tools he can count on.” In 555 plate appearances so far in 2017, Hampson has a .319/.379/.453 batting line with 23 doubles and seven home runs, but also 11 triples and 48 stolen bases (with an 81% success rate). Looking to next season, an assignment to Hartford seems a near certainty, where we will see how he handles the dreaded Double-A Jump.
