Most people involved in prospect development will tell you that outside of a promotion to the big leagues, the jump from High-A to Double-A can be the hardest. The reason is that the difference in the quality of players between those two is the biggest. We saw last year how Ryan McMahon struggled with the adjustment (though a season-long road trip made it that much harder) and the jump finally cooled Brendan Rodgers off this year as well. However, Brian Mundell has taken the challenge and passed it with flying colors.
While Mundell’s batting line looks a bit different in Hartford (.304/.406/.420) than it did in Lancaster (.299/.379/.504), the overall production is quite similar as he has a .379 wOBA in Double-A compared to his .384 in High-A. The fact that he’s increased his walk rate against pitchers with better stuff and control is high encouraging and the fact that he’s lost a few point in slugging percentage probably has more to do with leaving Lancaster than anything else.
