Coming into August, Willie Abreu’s foray into Single-A baseball wasn’t going exactly according to plan. The 22-year-old was hitting .265 with 10 home runs and only a .294 OBP. Abreu’s power in Boise made him a potential steal in the sixth round in last year’s draft but he wasn’t showing an approach at the plate that showed he would have any success in the Rockies system.
Since August 1st, Abreu has been on fire. Going 14-for-30 in the week of games since the calendar changed, including a 4-for-4 night last night. Abreu’s hot streak has pumped his average up to .280 and his OPS is now flirting with .800.
A solo home run last night upped his RBI count to 62, team best by 21, and he added his 32nd stolen base (also a team high). Abreu’s big night propelled the Tourists to a 7-0 victory over Lexington at home.
